We are pleased to present you with the first showing of our most recent signage project at Fremantle Prison – The Tunnels Interpretive Signage.

The main interpretive signage wall was installed in the last week of February.

A galvanized steel and glass wall over 3 metres high by 5 metres wide greets visitors as they enter through the galvanized steel tunnel and descend a ramp into the darkened complex. The interpretive wall enlightens visitors to both the scale, history and purpose of the tunnels in which they are about to descend 20 metres underground to explore.

Secondary interpretive signage is currently being installed within the Tunnels complex. We’ll upload a complete post detailing the whole project soon.

Here’s a bit of fun – a simple little javascript app designed by a some guy called Anatoly Zenkov.
The app tracks your mouse movements whilst working on your computer. At the end of the day you get a really cool looking piece of “art”.

The Australian Property Institute (WA) Division recently held their annual State Conference. We have worked closely with the API over a number of years (this is our twelfth conference) to create an integrated suite of conference materials (printed, web, multimedia, signage and promotional material) to which we consistently apply each conference’s theme.

Our second major project for Fremantle Prison was recently completed. This project follows the completion of the Visitor Centre Interpretive Signage Project where we developed an integrated wayfinding and interpretive graphics strategy for the entire prison.

The primary purpose of this project was to replace existing signage that is out-of-date in terms of its design and content, and which we felt impacted negatively on the visual aesthetics of the main courtyard area.

The guiding principle of our signage strategy was to ensure new signage would have minimal impact on the physical as well as spatial fabric of the site, but remain clearly identifiable to visitors and where possible have signage serve more than one purpose.

All of our primary signage vehicles subscribe to these principles; both the Terrace Signage and Courtyard Signage provide wayfinding and orientation for visitors and include an interpretive component detailing the original use and provenance of specific buildings. These signs facilitate the movement of visitors throughout the prison and enhance their experience by providing an added layer of interpretive and historical information they would otherwise not receive.

We also produced a range of glass interpretative panels that were installed throughout the main courtyard and café. These panels detailed the various uses of the entry complex, preservation and conservation efforts at the prison and general convict history.

The project has once again been received well from both visitors, local Council and the Heritage Council and of course we once again enjoyed working with Luke and his team.

If you are in Perth, we thoroughly recommend you visit the prison and see the work for yourself.

We were recently approached to create an identity for a new entrant to the Infrastructure Services Sector – Infrawest. From the outset we were briefed that there would be a tight development time line as the company was to be bidding for a large Infrastructure project and required all the visual elements of their brand to be rolled out in less than a month.

The Infrastructure sector is a highly competitive but niche sector, with only a few major companies sharing a slice of the largest infrastructure projects. After receiving the identity brief, we established the core objective of the identity should be to position Infrawest on a par with the product sector’s other major players.

We identified several key elements which have been successfully integrated into the brandmark that symbolize; partnerships, solidarity, Western Australia, road networks and movement. The core idea for the logo came quickly: the symbols base form being the iconic and recognisable shape of Western Australia. The logotype was created to compliment the symbol, its forms purposely solid yet not overpowering with a slight italic bias to achieve a sense of forward movement, symbolising the core service offering of Infrawest being Infrastructure Services (the building of Roads, Bridges, Rail, etc).

The colours of the brand further reinforce the message and meaning. A deep blue/grey has been specifically selected as the primary brand colour. The colour takes its inspiration from the colour of the base ingredients in Bitumen. The burnt yellow is representative of the roadbase materials and yellow is also typically used to represent progressive thinking.

We achieved the tight deadline with all elements of the core identity being rolled out across the key initial deliverables, in this case being the bid documents. Unfortunately as this is such a competitive industry sector and the outcome of the bid is yet to be publicly announced, we cannot as yet show you the results of the bid documents. However all foundation elements of the identity have been included above.

Although this project had a tight time line, the sucessful outcome again reinforced both to us and our client, the importance of establishing a clear creative brief at the outset of each and every project. Establishing a brief ensures all stakeholders are clear on the desired outcomes of the project, the processes required to achive the outcomes and the direction we will take with the identity design.

We’re looking forward to a long relationship with Infrawest and the opportunity to be involved in further developing their brand.

Part of being a designer is spending time looking at what others have done in the industry.

Usually this comes about by reading design blogs and one of my favourites is Brand New – a blog that highlights new corporate and brand identity design from around the world.

Recently there has been 2 posts about a couple of Australian designs – and what is very interesting is that they are classic examples of how to and how not to go about designing a logo or brand.

On one hand we have the City of Melbourne’s new brand – and is clearly in the “how to do it properly” camp. I won’t go into the design here (follow the link to the Brand New blog) I’ll just say it is a very strong solution for the City of Melbourne – I get it and I like it. Our only criticism (understandably) is why CoM felt they needed to commission a Sydney based brand firm – I think most people will agree that Melbourne is by far the cultural and creative epicentre for Australia. There are more quality design firms in Melbourne than any other city and certainly many that Axiom admires come from there and any number of them could have done an equally as good as job as Landor.

On the other hand is the design for the new NSW Government logo – which is a spectacular example of how a meagre budget and probably equally meagre planning and consultation has delivered a completely inadequate solution. One of the funny things is how the locals have chucked a wobbly over the $5000 budget – a mere 2% of the City of Melbourne budget .

To further add insult to injury – a crowdsourcing design company has waded into the fracas – by offering $1000 to anyone who can come up with a better design. A quick glance of the submissions so far proves that this method of design is completely farcical. (I will add a post about the cons to crowdsourcing soon – there are no positives).

The lesson here is a simple one – you get what you pay for.

Next time you happen to be strolling down “the terrace”, we’re excited to inform you that you can now see our work that has recently been installed to the lobby of the Enex100 building at 100 St Georges Terrace in Perth.

The installation is an impressive glass mural approximately 12 metres wide x 4 metres high. We created an abstracted interpretive montage based upon the history of the site and heritage images painstakingly sourced from the Battye Library collection.

The mural utilises a specialty glass product called DigiGlass, which is produced in Melbourne and each individual panel then shipped back to Perth.

We’ll post a full case study as soon as the professional photography of the project has been completed.

Visit the developments web site here.

Being commercially pragmatic in their design approach.

Never Sleep is a book written by Andre Andreev and G. Dan Covert from Dress Code and addresses the major disconnect between the life of a design student and the transition to being a design professional.

Recommended reading for any new graduates currently seeking employment in the design industry.
